The 15th Scottish Borders Walking Festival celebrates the lively and often colourful history of the Border Reivers with a programme full of themed walks and social events exploring the distinctive landscape that was home to the Border Reivers.
Taking in the stunning scenery surrounding Jedburgh and Hawick and including Denholm, Newcastleton and the Cheviot Hills this year’s festival boasts over 60 walks, from a 2 mile stroll through the lovely gardens of a country house on the banks of the River Teviot, to a challenging 14 mile hike from a 16th century castle.
You can also take a journey back into your own ancestral past, with the unique opportunity to test your DNA and the chance to search through the fascinating archives held at the Heritage Hub, in Hawick.
From the early fourteenth century to the early seventeenth century, the Scottish Borders experienced a period of intense conflict. Warfare eventually bred lawlessness and in order to survive, many ordinary Borderers were forced to turn to a life of “reiving” – cross border raids to steal.
The festival takes place from 5 – 13 September. Walks cost between £3.00 and £13.00 and social events are from £1.50 with some free events.
